Wendell Town Park is set to expand with a new $13 million athletic field complex, as announced by Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Polaski during a recent town board meeting. The planned facility will feature natural grass and synthetic turf fields designed for various sports, including football, soccer, and lacrosse, and will provide direct access to the Buffalo Creek Greenway. Funded by $11.2 million from voter-approved town bonds and $1.8 million from Wake County tourism funds, the complex aims to support local leagues and attract regional and national tournaments. Plans also include lighting for the multipurpose fields, funded by a partnership with the North Carolina Football Club. Currently, site planning and permitting are in progress, with expected final designs by fall 2025 and construction beginning in early 2026. Polaski emphasized the complex’s potential to not only enhance local youth sports but also draw visitors to showcase Wendell.
