Motorists are increasingly expressing concerns about the blinding effects of brighter LED headlights, leading to claims that road safety may be compromised. Lilian Greenwood, a transport minister, defended the safety of these lighting advancements, referencing statistics that reportedly show no negative trends in collision data due to headlight technology. However, the AA has highlighted that a significant number of drivers feel they are being dazzled by oncoming lights, particularly from SUVs. Labour MP Graeme Downie echoed these concerns, noting that while LED lights may improve visibility for drivers, they pose a danger to others on the road. Recent statistics revealed that dazzling headlights contributed to 216 incidents in 2023, prompting calls for independent research into headlight glare, which the government is expected to publish by summer 2025.
