In a bid to protect the endangered Hutton’s shearwater birds and enhance nighttime safety, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency will begin replacing old sodium lights along State Highway 1 in KaikÅura with energy-efficient LED lights next month. This initiative follows the district’s accreditation as an international dark sky sanctuary, aimed at reducing light pollution that disorients the seabirds, causing them to crash land. The new lighting system will direct light downwards, improving visibility for drivers and pedestrians while minimizing the risk to local wildlife. The project, expected to be completed in stages, will also include upgrades at several highway intersections and involves collaboration with the Takahanga Marae. KaikÅura District Council’s chief executive expressed optimism for the environmental benefits this change will bring.
