SAASST Promotes Awareness of Light Pollution

On April 29, 2025, the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology (SAASST), affiliated with the University of Sharjah, hosted an awareness event titled “Towards a Light Pollution-Free Sky in Sharjah” in celebration of International Dark Sky Week 2025. The initiative aimed to enhance environmental education and engage the community in addressing light pollution, which has significant impacts on ecosystems and human health. Director Fatima Alkhateri emphasized the collaborative responsibility of protecting the night sky. The event featured various interactive workshops, lectures, and activities, including a tour of space science exhibitions and a special show on light pollution’s effects. Attendees also enjoyed a live stargazing experience, using advanced telescopes to observe the implications of light pollution firsthand.
