In June 2023, Groveland, Florida, achieved recognition as the first certified International Dark Sky Community in both Florida and the Southeastern United States, thanks to its innovative Groveland Dark Sky Initiative. This program aims to combat light pollution through context-specific lighting standards that enhance public safety, protect wildlife habitats, and preserve the beauty of the night sky. Groveland’s initiative has garnered attention with an honorable mention at this year’s CNU Charter Awards. As the city rapidly grows—from a population of 2,978 in 2000 to over 24,000 today—it has started retrofitting lighting in neighborhoods and downtown areas, promoting community engagement through workshops and events like the annual Star Party. With significant funding for further developments, Groveland’s approach serves as a model for other communities looking to address light pollution effectively.
