In June 2023, Groveland, Florida, earned the title of the first International Dark Sky Community in the Southeastern United States, spearheading a movement against light pollution. The city’s Dark Sky Initiative aims to balance urban development with ecological preservation by employing dark sky-compliant lighting, which not only enhances public safety and protects local wildlife but also promotes healthier sleep cycles for residents. Collaborating with Duke Energy, Groveland has installed smart lighting solutions in new residential areas while fostering community engagement through events like the Star Party, which drew 700 attendees. With substantial financial investments for ongoing improvements, Groveland aspires to inspire surrounding regions to reclaim their night skies from the effects of urbanization, proving that environmental concerns can align with economic growth.
