Jackson Hole Achieves Dark Sky Certification as the First Commercial Airport

Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) in Wyoming has achieved a landmark distinction as the world’s first certified International Dark Sky Airport. Located within Grand Teton National Park, JAC underwent extensive retrofitting of nearly 200 light fixtures to minimize artificial lighting’s environmental impact. This initiative enhances stargazing and protects the park’s natural wildlife, emphasizing responsible outdoor lighting practices. Airport staff collaborated to develop a lighting management plan that meets FAA safety standards while adhering to DarkSky’s principles for effective outdoor lighting.
