A recent study conducted off Scotland’s west coast explored an innovative fishing method referred to as the “attraction cascade,” which creates a self-baiting pot to catch shrimp. Although the trial did not yield commercially viable shrimp catches, researchers believe that different locations might see better results. Dr. Tom Horton from Exeter’s Penryn campus emphasized the importance of finding lower-impact fishing alternatives, such as using static gear instead of trawling, to reduce by-catch and habitat disturbance. The study was supported by the UK Seafood Innovation Fund and Schmidt Marine Technology Partners.
