Will Eastern Ontario Transform into a Dark-Sky Preserve? A Local Organization Seeks to Make It Happen

Two men are spearheading an ambitious effort to transform much of eastern Ontario into a dark-sky preserve, aiming to attract astrotourism in response to a growing trend since the pandemic. Dark-sky preserves protect areas from light pollution to benefit nocturnal wildlife and enhance the visibility of celestial objects. John Criswick, founder of the NWNC Dark-Sky Project, aims to promote this initiative through Dark Sky International to draw more global attention than the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. The project plans to cover approximately 42,000 square kilometers, impacting over half a million residents from Cornwall to Petawawa, while implementing regulations on outdoor lighting to combat light pollution. As part of their educational campaign, they hope to hold a “dark week” in May 2026 to celebrate the region’s natural beauty and pristine night skies.
