A new generation of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) made from perovskite material is poised to revolutionize lighting technology. Researchers at Linköping University have found that perovskite LEDs (PeLEDs) are not only cheaper and easier to produce than traditional LEDs but also offer vibrant colors for screens. While PeLEDs show strong environmental performance similar to mature organic LEDs (OLEDs), challenges remain, particularly regarding their lifespan, which currently falls short of the estimated 10,000 hours needed to offset environmental impacts. With potential applications in displays, communications, and medical devices, PeLEDs could rival or surpass traditional LEDs in cost and sustainability as advancements continue.
