Evaluation of UNCW Sports and Entertainment Arena Feasibility Includes Consideration of NIL Lawsuit

UNC Wilmington (UNCW) is exploring the development of a new basketball arena and concert venue as part of a broader plan to enhance its sports facilities. Following a feasibility study approved by the Board of Trustees in August 2024, the university is evaluating the potential for renovating the existing Trask Coliseum or constructing a new facility altogether. With Trask, built in 1977, deemed outdated, Athletics Director Mike Oblinger emphasized the need for modern amenities, including improved concessions and seating options. The proposed facility aims to mirror those of other NCAA Division I schools and could also host concerts. However, financial uncertainties related to NCAA regulations and a recent legal settlement could influence the project’s direction. Feedback from surveys sent to alumni and fans indicates strong support for updates to the athletic facilities.
