The Town of Front Royal is launching an initiative to replace its outdoor lighting with DarkSky-compliant fixtures in an effort to combat light pollution and its negative effects on both human health and local wildlife. Light pollution, which impacts up to 80% of the world’s population, contributes to sleep disorders, habitat disruption, and wasteful energy consumption, costing the U.S. economy billions annually. Led by Carey Saffelle, the director of energy services, the project began on April 28 and aims to replace all 2,000 municipal lights over the next four years. The new fixtures are designed to be energy-efficient and environmentally friendly, with a lifespan of 50,000 to 100,000 hours compared to the old bulbs’ 6,000 to 15,000 hours, thereby reducing maintenance costs and carbon emissions. Saffelle’s own inspiration for the initiative came from a presentation by the town’s Advisory Committee for Environmental Sustainability.
