Researchers are advancing the use of light in aquaculture to enhance fish growth and wellbeing by developing lighting regimes tailored to fish biology. Anja Striberny from Nofima has initiated an industry survey in Norway to gather insights on current light control practices, merging research findings with practical experiences of fish farmers. The project also involves characterizing light-sensitive proteins in salmon, as existing measurement standards may not accurately reflect fish perception. Collaborating with various research institutions and industry partners, the initiative is funded by the Norwegian Seafood Research Fund and will continue until June 2028, aiming to improve fish physiology and welfare through better light management.
