Huntsville’s Outdoor Lighting Bylaw to Be Fully Implemented on January 25, 2026

At the May 28 General Committee meeting, Huntsville councillors discussed the impending expiration of a ten-year compliance period for the Outdoor Lighting Bylaw, originally passed in 2016. Staff proposed repealing the current bylaw in favor of an updated version that includes significant changes, such as requiring architectural and landscape lighting to be turned off between 11 p.m. and sunrise, with certain exemptions for security lighting. The new bylaw also mandates that path lighting use motion sensors and introduces administrative penalties for non-compliance—absent in the previous version. Mayor Nancy Alcock highlighted the need for a communication strategy to educate residents on these changes, aiming for community buy-in before enforcement begins.
