Lawsuit Filed by Staten Island Couple Claiming Devastation from LED Sofa Fire

Walter Matuza and Zoe Hartman from Grant City, Staten Island, are suing Ashley Furniture and a Chinese firm, Happy Smart Furnishing, after a defective sofa they purchased caught fire, destroying their home and causing emotional trauma. The fire, sparked by LED lighting within the sofa, occurred in August 2023, displacing the couple and impacting their lives significantly, including delaying their wedding plans. While insurance covered some losses, irreplaceable items of sentimental value were destroyed. Following the incident, a recall was issued for similar furniture pieces due to fire hazards, but Matuza learned of it only weeks later. The lawsuit claims that both the manufacturer and retailer are liable for the destruction and emotional distress caused.
