Boulder City, located just 30 miles from Las Vegas, is embracing its dark skies as part of a concerted effort to combat light pollution and promote astro-tourism. The Nevada Division of Outdoor Recreation recently launched a Dark Skies Toolkit to educate communities on reducing artificial light and enhancing the natural night sky experience. This initiative is backed by Senate Bill 52, which aims to recognize areas for their ecological and economic value related to dark skies. With plans for a Dark Skies Community Certification, Boulder City is retrofitting its streetlights and promoting environmental sustainability. State officials are optimistic that these efforts will attract stargazers, boost local tourism, and foster appreciation for Nevada’s exceptional nocturnal landscapes.
