A new study from Flinders University and Monash University reveals that casino lighting, particularly blue-enriched light, may significantly influence risky gambling behavior. This research, published in Nature’s Scientific Reports, demonstrates how blue wavelengths commonly used in casinos affect participants’ sensitivity to financial losses, making them more inclined to take risks. Lead author Dr. Alicia Lander highlights that while people typically avoid losses, blue-enriched lighting reduces this aversion, altering decision-making processes in brain areas related to reward. The study also notes a gender difference, with women showing greater reluctance to gamble under both lighting conditions. These findings raise important questions about the psychological impact of lighting in gambling environments.
