Oaks Park is planning to construct a towering new drop ride, expected to reach 135 feet and provide thrilling views of the Willamette River and the nearby Oaks Bottom wildlife Refuge. However, the lighting design, which features eight LED spotlights aimed skyward, has raised significant concerns among wildlife advocates. These groups argue that the illuminated ride could confuse migrating birds and disrupt local wildlife, particularly during peak migration seasons. Despite Oaks Park’s adjustments to the lighting plan, criticism persists regarding potential light pollution and its negative impacts on both wildlife and residential neighborhoods. As appeals against the city’s approval of the ride and its accompanying lights continue, a decision from a city hearings officer is anticipated by July 7, with the park aiming to unveil the new attraction in 2027.
