The Sunshine Coast is poised to become Australia’s leading Dark Sky Reserve, with a new Draft Lighting Management Plan aiming to reduce light pollution across a 900-square-kilometer area. Spearheaded by Dr. Ken Wishaw of the Maleny Observatory and supported by various government agencies, the initiative seeks to replace non-compliant lighting infrastructure that disrupts wildlife and obscures the night sky. With over 95% of public feedback in favor of the proposal, the Council is encouraging further input on the plan before finalizing it. Successful implementation will not only enhance astronomical visibility but also establish a national benchmark for sustainable lighting practices.
