Partnership Formed Among Truckee, Nevada City, and the Truckee Cultural District

The Town of Truckee, in partnership with Nevada City and local arts organizations, is excited to host the second annual “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” photo contest, running from June 23 to July 27, 2025. This initiative encourages participants to capture the beauty of the night sky while raising awareness about light pollution. Mayor Jan Zabriskie highlighted the contest’s role in promoting ecological health and behavioral change regarding artificial nighttime lighting. Photographers can enter in three categories: Professional, Amateur, and Youth (under 18), with special awards for the Best of the East and Best of the West. Prizes include a $500 Sustainable Truckee Gift Card and a photography workshop. Community voting will help determine finalists, whose work will be displayed at a public reception later this summer.
