At the Leafy Hydroponics Event, Arnold de Kievit, International Sales Manager at Oreon, reflected on the evolution of LED lighting in leafy greens over the past 15 years, which he categorized into four phases. Initially met with skepticism—described as “cowboys” by growers—LED technology faced many challenges, such as high costs and unfamiliarity. However, as grower demand for better, year-round yield increased, the industry gradually adopted LED solutions. The progression saw a transformation from basic, low-intensity setups to advanced, customizable configurations with higher efficiencies and greater spectral flexibility. Today, LED systems are the standard in the industry, achieving impressive yields and paving the way for future innovations, including dynamic control technologies. Arnold anticipates that the next phase will involve even higher light output, enhanced dimmability, and the rising popularity of vertical propagation methods.
