Kendal has welcomed four new heritage street lights installed on Thorny Hills as part of a collaborative effort involving residents, Westmorland and Furness Council, and the Friends of the Lake District’s Dark Skies Cumbria initiative. This project, which celebrates the bicentenary of the Georgian terraced buildings in the Kendal Conservation Area, replaces outdated light fixtures with modern, dark skies compliant lanterns that focus light downward, minimizing light pollution. The new cast iron columns, refurbished locally, emit a warm 2,700 Kelvin amber light and are designed to dim during late hours, enhancing energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. Residents have expressed satisfaction with the improved aesthetics and functionality of the new lighting, noting its positive impact on sleep and the environment.
