In Kendal’s conservation area, Thorny Hills has been illuminated with four new heritage-style street lights, thanks to a collaboration between Westmorland and Furness Council and the Friends of the Lake District’s Dark Skies Cumbria Project. This lighting upgrade follows requests from local residents Malcolm Whiteside and Peter Kuit, inspired by similar improvements at Cliff Terrace. The new lamps, designed to minimize light pollution and energy usage, feature down-directed light and a warm amber glow that enhances the Georgian aesthetic of the area. Residents have praised the changes, noting improvements in sleep quality and the lights’ energy efficiency. The initiative aligns with local efforts to promote dark sky-friendly lighting and has been guided by the Friends of the Lake District’s best practices adopted statewide.
