Kendal’s historic Thorny Hills has recently upgraded its street lighting to comply with dark skies regulations, enhancing both the aesthetics and environmental impact of the area. This initiative, a collaboration between Westmorland and Furness Council and the Friends of the Lake District’s Dark Skies Cumbria Project, was inspired by local residents Malcom Whiteside and Peter Kuit. The new heritage-style lights, featuring refurbished cast iron columns and designed to minimize light pollution, direct illumination downwards to reduce glare and sky glow while using energy-efficient technology. Councillor Peter Thornton emphasized the council’s commitment to lowering carbon emissions and protecting nocturnal wildlife. Residents report a significant improvement in their quality of life, enjoying both comfort and elegance in the upgraded lighting, which has garnered positive feedback from the community.
