Budderfly, an energy-as-a-service company, has been enhancing energy efficiency for small- and medium-sized businesses across the U.S. for nearly a decade by upgrading their energy infrastructure, including HVAC systems and LED lighting. Recently, it activated load management capabilities at around 200 locations, taking a significant step into the virtual power plant (VPP) market. This shift allows Budderfly to control energy usage across its sites, enabling participation in utilities’ demand-response programs with greater flexibility. By investing in infrastructure upgrades and managing the energy systems of clients like McDonald’s and Subway, Budderfly has experienced substantial growth, increasing its revenue from $400,000 in 2017 to over $250 million in 2025. With a recent capital raise exceeding $1 billion, the company is poised to capitalize on the burgeoning energy efficiency market as businesses increasingly recognize the value of energy savings.
