Regional Economic Development Consortium Led by Case Western Reserve University Selected as One of 29 Semifinalists for $160M National Science Foundation ‘Engines’ Initiative
A consortium led by Case Western Reserve University in Northeast Ohio has been selected as one of 29 semifinalists for a $160 million initiative from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) aimed at driving national economic transformation through technological innovation. Known as NEO-SMART, this unique Ohio semifinalist among 71 applicants focuses on developing advanced materials and manufacturing processes to strengthen domestic production and create resilient supply chains. With over 60 partners, including local economic organizations and manufacturers, NEO-SMART seeks to position Northeast Ohio as a global hub for innovation. If awarded the grant, the consortium aims to enhance workforce development and support projects in areas such as advanced recycling, AI applications, and energy-efficient manufacturing processes. Finalists will be announced early next year.
