Dark Sky Areas Safeguard Genuine Nighttime Darkness

CINCINNATI (WXIX) – A number of national and state parks have received certification as “dark sky preserves,” which allows for exceptional views of starry night skies by regulating light pollution. This initiative, led by Ruskin Hartley, CEO of Dark Sky International, aims to promote responsible outdoor lighting. Tens of thousands of volunteers worldwide are participating in monitoring star visibility to track changes in the brightness of the night sky. Hartley emphasizes the importance of preserving darkness for the natural life cycles of animals and plants, highlighting that increasing artificial light from technological advancements has rapidly brightened the night sky.
