Bluff, a small town in southeastern Utah, has achieved the prestigious international dark sky designation from DarkSky International, becoming one of only 57 certified dark sky communities globally. This designation, awarded on June 24, is a result of years of commitment to reducing light pollution through initiatives like an exterior lighting ordinance, volunteer sky brightness monitoring, and community stargazing events. Mayor Ann Leppanen expressed pride in the designation, highlighting the significance of Bluff’s dark skies to the community’s identity. The Bears Ears Partnership will provide ongoing educational programs and monitoring to maintain this status. To celebrate, Bluff will host a Dark Sky Festival on November 14-15.
