The Government of Asturias has unveiled Spain’s first underground greenhouse project in Laviana, part of the Agroalnext initiative aimed at fostering sustainable and resilient agricultural practices. This innovative endeavor, backed by regional and European Next Generation funds, transforms a former mine shaft into a testing ground for crops grown under energy-efficient LED lighting. During a recent visit, Minister Borja Sánchez highlighted the project’s focus on sustainability and technological advancement, as it explores various plant varieties—including culinary sprouts, aromatic herbs, and mushrooms—suitable for underground cultivation. Developed in partnership with the Hunosa mining company and indoor farming experts, the project aims to redefine agriculture in former mining regions, aligning with broader European sustainability goals.
