First Underground Greenhouse Opens in Asturias, Spain

The Government of Asturias has initiated Spain’s first underground greenhouse project, converting an old mine shaft in Laviana as part of the Agroalnext program, funded by regional and European Next Generation resources. Minister of Science, Industry, and Employment Borja Sánchez recently visited the site, where substrate-grown crops are being tested under energy-efficient LED lighting. The pilot trial, conducted in the La Raya gallery of the Carrio well, involves various plant species to assess their adaptability to underground conditions, aiming to create a sustainable agricultural model. This innovative project, developed by the Regional Agri-Food Research and Development Service in collaboration with the Hunosa mining company and Cantábrica Agricultura Urbana, has the potential to transform former mining regions into hubs for Agriculture 4.0, aligning with European sustainability goals and promoting year-round cultivation.
