Settle Town Council has successfully reduced light pollution around Castlebergh Crag through its ongoing project to upgrade streetlights to dark sky approved LED fixtures. This initiative not only lowers energy costs and carbon emissions but also aims to preserve the natural beauty of the Yorkshire Dales National Park by protecting nocturnal wildlife such as bats and owls. Town clerk Katie Dugdale emphasized the council’s commitment to enhancing the area’s ecosystem, with plans for wildlife enhancements including bat boxes and hedgehog houses. Funded by a grant from the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority’s Sustainable Development Fund, the project reflects a broader effort to improve energy efficiency across Settle, with additional upgrades planned for other areas of the town.
