Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve has been ranked 8th out of 76 national parks for visibility, despite recent challenges from wildfires affecting air quality and haze. An analysis by the Washington Post highlights the park’s enduring beauty, aided by its designation as an International Dark Sky Park since 2019, which supports stargazing and night sky preservation. The park generated $37.9 million in economic impact in 2023, underscoring its importance to the local economy. Research indicates that even minor increases in light pollution could deter nearly half of its visitors, highlighting the critical connection between visibility, tourism, and community well-being.
