In a significant initiative to protect Nevada’s night skies, the Nevada Division of Outdoor Recreation (NDOR) and Travel Nevada have launched the Nevada Dark Skies Toolkit, a comprehensive resource aimed at reducing light pollution and enhancing astrotourism across the state. This first-of-its-kind toolkit provides communities with practical guidance on adopting dark sky-friendly practices, supporting Nevada’s Starry Skies Certification Program initiated by Senate Bill 52. Key features include a step-by-step certification guide, best lighting practices, and education outreach strategies. With two internationally recognized DarkSky sites and a vast amount of public land, Nevada is poised to lead in night sky conservation and astrotourism. Communities like Pahrump and Boulder City are already making strides towards this goal. The toolkit is available for free download at ndor.nv.gov/dark-skies, and NDOR invites collaborations with eligible groups for its pilot program.
