The University of Toronto’s St. George campus is undergoing a significant lighting upgrade as part of Project Leap, aimed at cutting greenhouse gas emissions by over 50% by 2027. The transition from traditional fluorescent and incandescent lights to energy-efficient LEDs will occur in 38 buildings, resulting in enough electricity savings to power more than 520 homes annually. This retrofit not only supports U of T’s climate goals but also enhances research capabilities for scientists in various disciplines. With improved, precise lighting in 80 growth chambers, researchers can now better simulate environmental conditions for over 500 plant species, advancing studies on plant resilience and insect migration. The initiative, which is expected to save about 500,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity each year, is a critical step toward fostering sustainability and supporting research on pressing environmental issues.
