Liberty Hill has been officially recognized as an International Dark Sky Community by DarkSky International, marking it as Williamson County’s first such designation. This distinction, the 23rd Dark Sky Place in Texas, highlights the city’s commitment to preserving its night sky amidst rapid development. Founded in the mid-1800s, Liberty Hill, located 33 miles northwest of Austin, is balancing growth with historical charm and environmental preservation. The effort began in 2020, driven by the local volunteer group Save Our Stars, which implemented an Outdoor Lighting Ordinance and committed to retrofitting over 1,100 lights for better compliance. Community leaders emphasize that this achievement reflects collective dedication to maintaining the beauty of the Texas night sky for future generations. Looking ahead, the Dark Sky Committee plans outreach initiatives and workshops to enhance awareness and compliance.
