Galway Participates in Global Research on Urban Light Pollution

Galway has been featured in a significant international study on light pollution, which highlights that sources of urban light pollution extend beyond traditional streetlights. Conducted by researchers from Germany, and including contributions from University of Galway’s Georgia MacMillan, the study examined over 230,000 light sources during more than 3,800 night-time surveys across Europe, revealing that residential and commercial lighting contributes more to brightening the night sky than previously recognized. The findings, published in Nature Cities, underscore the persistent use of lighting well past midnight, challenging common assumptions about urban illumination.
