In a transformative project for Kruunuvuorenranta, just outside Helsinki, the design team Lighting Design Collective has turned an old seaside oil silo into a striking permanent art installation. Commissioned by Helsinki World Design Capital 2012, the project involved drilling holes into the 36-meter wide, 17-meter tall structure and adorning it with 1,250 white LED lights. By day, sunlight creates dynamic shadow patterns inside the silo, while at night, a computerized lighting system simulates flocks of birds and responds to local wind patterns, illuminating the area until 2:30 AM when the last ferry departs for the capital. This innovative approach not only revitalizes the site but also enhances the community’s cultural landscape.
