Renowned Destination Achieves Status as Colorado’s First ‘Dark Sky-Certified’ Ski Town

Breckenridge has been officially designated as a Certified Dark Sky Community by DarkSky International, marking it as the first ski resort in Colorado to earn this recognition. Since 2007, the town has been dedicated to reducing light pollution and preserving the night sky. In pursuit of this certification, Breckenridge implemented significant measures, including replacing non-compliant streetlights and establishing lighting zones. Mayor Kelly Owens emphasized that this certification reflects Breckenridge’s commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible tourism. With this designation, the town joins over 250 locations worldwide striving to protect natural dark skies, enhancing its appeal as a destination for stargazing and education.
