The first pile for the “Vitrum” greenhouse has been driven in Bleiswijk, Netherlands, marking the start of a high-tech research facility by Wageningen University & Research (WUR). Constructed by Bom Group, this greenhouse aims to tackle future challenges in horticulture, focusing on sustainability, climate-neutral practices, and digitalisation. With no reliance on fossil fuels, it will incorporate solar panels, heat pumps, and advanced water and nutrient reuse systems, alongside robotics and AI for enhanced crop monitoring. Spanning approximately 5,500 square meters, Vitrum will also serve as an educational hub for students. Scheduled for completion in 2027, it complements another research greenhouse under construction at WUR’s Wageningen Campus, both critical for advancing horticultural knowledge and practices.
