Draconid Meteor Shower Set to Peak Tonight: Expect Excitement or Disappointment Among Skywatchers

The Draconid meteor shower will be active from October 6-10, 2025, peaking on the evening of October 8. Typically a minor shower, it often displays only a few slow-moving meteors per hour, but has shown the potential for significant bursts in rare years, notably in 1933 and 1946. This year’s peak coincides with a nearly full Harvest Supermoon on October 6, which will likely obscure many of the meteors, allowing observers to see only about 2-6 per hour. The best time to watch is in the early evening after sunset, particularly if located in dark areas away from city lights. Though expectations for a dramatic display are tempered by lunar interference, enthusiasts remain hopeful for unexpected “dragon” outbursts. Following the Draconids, the Orionid meteor shower will peak on October 21-22 under more favorable viewing conditions, alongside the anticipated appearances of two comets and possible auroras due to recent solar activity.
