On September 24, Timothy Lawlor, a physics professor at Penn State Brandywine, addressed the Middletown Township Environmental Advisory Committee about the significant impacts of light pollution. Highlighting the widespread problems caused by artificial lighting at night, Lawlor emphasized that solutions are often simple. He reflected on his childhood experiences with starry skies and stressed the alarming possibility that one-third of humanity can no longer view the Milky Way, while 80% live under faded skies. As a board member of the West Chester Green Team’s Dark Skies Committee, Lawlor advocates for responsible lighting practices to mitigate glare, “sky glow,” and light trespass. The committee collaborates with regional partners on outreach and education efforts and has contributed to legislative changes, like the recent statewide dark sky law in Illinois. Lawlor aims to inspire communities to adopt measures to reduce light pollution, enhancing both environmental and health outcomes.
