Australian scientists have developed a new LED light system designed to mimic ocean camouflage in an effort to deter Great White Shark attacks. The research reveals that marine predators, like Great Whites, target prey by detecting silhouettes against sunlight, which makes surfers vulnerable. By outfitting seal decoys with LED lights, the study found that brighter lights significantly reduced shark interactions, highlighting a potential new non-invasive shark deterrent strategy. This approach leverages the sharks’ poor visual acuity and their inability to perceive color, potentially leading to greater safety for surfers and swimmers. Ongoing tests are exploring the effectiveness of this technology on surfboards as well.
