This week, residents of the northern United States have the opportunity to witness the Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, due to a predicted geomagnetic storm. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasts that the aurora could be visible across 14 states, particularly along the US-Canada border, on the nights of June 24 and 25. The storm, rated G2 on a scale of G1 to G5, is driven by a large hole in the sun’s atmosphere releasing solar wind toward Earth, raising the Kp index—which indicates aurora intensity—to a potential level of 5. For optimal viewing, experts suggest heading to dark, open areas away from city lights, with the best times to observe the lights occurring between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.
