Almendra, a stevia extract supplier, is pioneering an agtech innovation designed to enhance crop yields across a range of plants, including soybeans and rice, through a technique called “night interruption.” Unlike traditional greenhouse applications, Almendra’s system applies specific wavelengths of light at night to manipulate flowering cycles, optimizing vegetative growth and boosting yields. CEO Inder Singh highlighted successful field trials, particularly in Brazil, where the technology delayed flowering in soybeans, resulting in significant yield improvements. The firm, based in Singapore with manufacturing in Thailand, plans to commercialize the technology and is seeking partners for deployment in various agricultural markets, starting with the USA, Brazil, and Australia. With the decreasing cost of LED lighting, retrofitting existing irrigation systems has become feasible, presenting a cost-effective solution for growers looking to enhance their productivity without expensive inputs or genetic engineering.
