UK motorists could soon face changes to driving regulations concerning “dazzling” headlights, as the government prepares to release findings from a study focused on LED headlights and road safety this summer. A 2023 survey revealed that around 90% of drivers are concerned about the excessive brightness of modern headlights, prompting research into the causes of headlight glare and potential solutions. The future roads minister, Lilian Greenwood, noted the research aims to address public concerns and will conclude in summer 2025, with additional scrutiny from an international UN group anticipated by September 2027. An RAC study showed that 91% of drivers feel “dazzled” by bright headlights, with many fearing they could lead to accidents. The Department for Transport has recorded incidents where dazzling headlights contributed to roadway accidents, with LED headlights particularly problematic when misaligned.
