Assessing Campus Lighting Brightness at UW After Hours

As daylight hours gradually increase, concerns about student safety on the University of Washington (UW) campus remain, particularly with sunsets occurring before 5:30 p.m. Despite the installation of over 1,900 LED lights to enhance visibility, some students feel unsafe navigating darker areas, especially near Drumheller Fountain. UW officials acknowledge these safety concerns, emphasizing ongoing efforts to improve lighting, including a $50,000 investment from the Campus Sustainability Fund for LED upgrades. Maintenance supervisor Eric Yerxa noted significant benefits from the switch to LED, including energy savings and improved visibility. In response to safety perceptions, plans for a campus safety walk were set, but have been postponed due to weather conditions. Community members and university representatives are actively seeking solutions to enhance nighttime safety on campus.
