The Government of Asturias has launched Spain’s first underground greenhouse, transforming an old mine shaft in Laviana as part of the Agroalnext program. This innovative project, backed by regional and European Next Generation funds, aims to cultivate green, digital, and climate-resilient agriculture. Minister Borja Sánchez visited the experimental site, which is testing nearly a dozen crop varieties under energy-efficient LED lighting. Managed by the Regional Agri-Food Research and Development Service with support from local mining company Hunosa, the project explores the potential for sustainable underground farming that leverages the unique climate conditions of mine galleries. This initiative is seen as a crucial step toward future agriculture in former mining regions, aligning with broader sustainability goals set by the European “Farm to Fork” strategy and the World Health Organization’s One Health approach.
