As part of Earth Day 2025, the Barnes County Historical Society will host Patrick Sommer from DarkSky International for a lecture titled “The Need for Dark Skies: The Biological Impacts of Light Pollution” on April 24 at 7 p.m. at the Barnes County Museum in Valley City, N.D. Sommer will discuss how light pollution adversely affects wildlife, particularly migrating birds, and highlight the benefits of reducing artificial light for both ecosystems and human health. He aims to raise awareness about light pollution’s effects and promote community adoption of night sky-friendly lighting ordinances. The event is free and open to the public, in partnership with Valley City State University. For additional information, attendees can contact Wes Anderson at 701-845-0966.
