Bluff, a small town in southeastern Utah, proudly received its Dark Sky designation in late June, recognizing its commitment to preserving the night sky. Located 25 miles north of the Arizona border, Bluff emphasizes community-led efforts to respect both land and sky, evidenced by its exterior lighting ordinance promoting night-sky-friendly illumination. Since 2016, the town has celebrated its celestial heritage with an annual star party, featuring conservation talks, Indigenous star stories, and telescope viewing. To commemorate its new status, Bluff will host its inaugural two-day Dark Sky Festival in November. The designation, shared by over 230 areas across 20 counties, requires adherence to quality outdoor lighting, policies aimed at minimizing light pollution, and a focus on community outreach and education.
