The town of Bluff has been designated an International Dark Sky Community by DarkSky International, becoming the first in San Juan County and the sixth in Utah. This designation underscores Bluff’s commitment to preserving the night sky, supported by its proximity to four International Dark Sky Parks, making southeastern Utah a premier destination for stargazers. Mayor Ann Leppanen highlighted the community’s pride in this achievement, reflecting years of effort to align lighting ordinances with DarkSky guidelines. The designation not only involves local residents in compliance efforts but also includes educational initiatives through a partnership with Bears Ears Partnership. Bluff will host its inaugural Dark Sky Festival on November 14-15, 2025, celebrating the beauty of the night sky. For more information, visit the Bears Ears Partnership website.
